In 1985 215 New Zealanders died of drowning in one year. Since then this figure has declined to average 105 deaths per year over the past 5 years due to a comprehensive Water Safety programme run by Water Safety NZ. Despite this decline, New Zealand has one of the highest rates of drowning per capita of any developed country.
Where are people drowning? Rivers account for the largest proportion of drowning locations followed by beaches. By activity most drowning victims are swimming at the time while other recreational activities such as kayaking and landbased fishing have high numbers of associated deaths.
Hopefully you are never in a position that you have to evacuate one of your part members from the outdoors that can’t get themselves out due to illness or injury. It is a pretty stressful position to be in. While you can carry somebody a small distance it really isn’t a real option for distances over a kilometre or two.
