Pre Hospital Emergency Care

Another awesome week on the Te Roro Te Rangi Marae in Rotorua in Febuary. Peak Safety ran a PreHospital Emergency Care couse and a PreHospital Emergency Care refresher during the week and managed to get out and about into the bush to put the classroom theory into a practical setting.

The PHEC course is certainly a big tax on the old brain but everyone coped well and passed the course with ease. Feedback suggests that the pre course PHEC assignment, the mid week assignment and the exam were all valuable learning tools as were the graphic video sections.

The last 2 days of the course saw several students join the group for a PreHospital Emergency Care refresher. They were immediately thrust into the hot seat and into a good scenario involving a mini eruption.

Included in the couse for the first time were some advanced airway management techniques as well as Intra Muscular Injection practices and a suturing demo. The usual course content was still there with a special emphasis on the Outdoor First Aid specific injuries and medical conditions.

Thanks to all who attended and we hope to catch you all out there on your adventures.

Mountain Bike First Aid

This summer we have been busy out in the local forests, teaching some half day outdoor first aid courses to keen mountain bikers. We set up some very realistic scenarios right from the start to get the students thinking on their feet/ or their bikes. The Peak Saftey team joined the students for a great ride through he forest before we really got stuck into the course.

For many, this was an opportunity to refresh their first aid skills in a unique setting.

The courses generally consist of an initial scenario out of the blue to see exactly how much info from previous courses has been retained. This is followed by a short ride through the forest to then watch some Mtn Biking crash video clips and a discussion about how to best manage the scenes.

By the end of the courses, all of the students were confident in carrying out a thorough patient assessment and treatment and it was great to see the students using these first aid skills and working as a team.

The Mountain Bike First Aid courses are a growing part of the Peak Safety Outdoor First Aid business and are increasing in popularity. Attendees consist of a mixture of recreational riders as well as event staff and Mtn Bike course marshalls.

It has been great to combine a bit of riding with some fun courses......

Oxfam Course Audit

Peak Safety has recently been contracted to perform a course audit for the Oxfam trail walk which is occuring later this year. The event safety work has been getting busier and busier lately which is great as this work is exciting and enjoyable.

As part of the Oxfam event safety we rode mountain bikes around the 100km course in the baking hot January sun. Along the way we took GPS waypoints every 1km. There will be course markers at these waypoints so that participants will know exactly where they are during the event. Additionally we assessed logical emergency access points including helipads and liased with private landowners should access to the course be required on the day.

We continue to increase the amount of event safety management that Peak Safety performs which is now a significant part of the business. For some events we provide medical services and Safety Managers on the day while for others we create, audit and assist with improving the event Safety Plan.

Good luck to all those entering the Oxfam in Taupo this year. Its a great event for a great cause.
